A day off in the company of gnomes
We took our first day off in Riga almost two weeks ago, and felt we had deserved another here in Wroclaw. The city might not be as well-known as Cracow, but has the same kind of wonderful architecture and lively street cafes and restaurants.
An interesting detail are the small gnome statues spread all over the old town. In the 1980s a group of activists would create paintings of gnomes on top of anti-goverment graffiti that had been covered up by the authorities. Today the gnomes are probably more of a tourist attraction than a political statement, but their historical background as an innovative form of protest is certainly fascinating.
